This morning, I knew I’d make it to Rotterdam. The only question was how will I get there?!
In the Netherlands, the signs for bicycle roads are a little different then in good old Germany. There are a lot of „Knootpunts“, each with its own number. If you know which number is near your destination, everything should go smoothly. Well, if not, you‘ll have a good time figuring out how this system works. Today, I discovered the first streetsign to Rotterdam when I got about 20km far, it said 35km. Okay, so about 2 hours left. Not that bad!
The next sign had me wondering: „Only 21km?! But 10 minutes ago… Nevermind, just keep on cycling.“
Then there was a long period of nothingness, few houses, no people, no sign. Usually no signs mean straight on, so I kept going. But the direction I was going in seemed a little off. The next sign sent me in the total opposite direction, but not where I came from, just the next road left, then right, then left. It felt like zigzagging through the open field.
When I arrived in Rotterdam, instead of the promised 55km, there were 80km on my speedometer. Luckily, this whole trip is not about seeing everything in as little time as possible; So I had a smile when I arrived and immediately looked for the next best place to fill my empty stomach.
